Ancillary Text - Magazine Advertisment
The decisions to create the Magazine advertisment like so, came from the primary research shown on my blog and I used Photoshop to create it.
Website - ancillary text
http://offshorebreakk.wix.com/personinside
Here is the link to the website, that is here to compliment the video. I have linked the music video and the website together by using simular themes, such as; font, imagery, and colour.
Main product and ancillary texts
How effective is the combination of your
main product and ancillary texts?
Forms and Conventions
In what ways does my media video use, develop,
or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Audience Feedback
I sat down with group of friends and asked them to brainstorm the pros and cons of my music video, this is what they came up with:
|
Cons
|
Pros
|
|
Not enough colours? Colour may emphasize
certain shots and link with lighter hearted lyrics
|
Close-up on guitar diagonally
was a good shot, and worked well.
|
|
Wider range of shots and a
quicker turnover.
|
Visual links to music
|
|
No close-up of Kendall till 24
seconds, therefore need to introduce him quicker.
|
1.46 – good lip syncing (walls
are all grey, close-up on his face emphasizes he’s boxed in)
|
|
3.14 bad lip syncing
|
17 seconds, good transition,
smooth
|
|
1.59 – transition not great, too
jolty and didn’t match the music.
|
32 seconds – good lip syncing
|
|
Better link with band, than only
shown in the screen print.
Seems out the blue and no
special effects.
|
|
|
The extreme close up on lips was
too much – poor.
|
|
Opening shot – The overall feeling was that there was not enough depth of field, however it was a good establishing shot. People also felt that i needed a close-up shot of Kendall earlier on, to introduce him to the viewers.
Closing shot – not much relevance to the rest of the video, even though
it was a really good idea and closing shot. Many people loved this idea, and decided it didn't matter that there hadn't been a direct link too the video as it was within the framing throughout.
Black and White – Why? The song is about moving on, and going forward –
positive?
It helped define many shots, for example, close-up's on the guitar and on Kendall's face. Without being in black and white these shots would have not been as effective, as they would not appear as dramatic or significant and may have been blurred in with the rest of the shot rather than standing out and making an impact.
MAGAZINE ADVERTISMENT
Positive - Relates/links to video well – special effects appropriate.
Negative - More colour to make it stand out – titles in red etc.
WEBSITE
Positive - Photo scroll and twitter effective – interactive
Negative - Video at the top rather than a picture?

Potential Picture for Advertisment
This is a picture taken from the music video location. This is effective to help link the music video and ancillary text together. Research showed that Black and white was an effective colour to use, and I think the editing of this picture creates a creative feel, which helps me to attract the target market I have identified.
Magazine advertisment -Research
Magazine advertisements from desemester
These allowed me to identify the key concepts of a magazine advertisment. This research allowed me to identify that black and white colour effects are important, to make the advert standout. a picture of the band/singer is also important and needs to dominate the picture, so the audience see what they are waiting for.

Potential Photo's for Magazine Advertisment
Here are all the different shots I thought about using for my Magazine Advertisment.
Overall I felt the black and white photo's were most effective and that they linked best with the music video and the website. I changed the contrast in all the photos to make the image look more dramatic and defined.

Website - Person inside solo
These are the top 6 headings that I have discovered through my research, are vital on an artists webpage. These key headings will allow the viewers to get inside information about the band, and at the same time the headings will help promote the band.
The homepage must sum the band up in one page, little information should be needed but a quick understanding on the theme and type of band they are should be quickly interoperated. To create a strong link with the music video.
Music - This will promote the bands music and allow viewers to discover who they are and what they do best. If you have discovered an artists webpage, one of the first things that viewers will do is listen to their music.
Videos - Videos promote the band further and allow viewers to get more personal insight into the band. For example, for person inside, it gives the audience an idea about where the lyrics have come from and what the lead singer Kendall is all about.
Photos are important to have on the website to show where the band have been, there experiences, what they are like, they're theme/stereotypes etc. This allows viewers/audience to follow the bands steps and discover what they are about.
News - this includes all the latests updates about where they have been, where they are going next, any information on whether they are bringing out new tracks or videos etc. These makes the site more interactive and allows the audience to watch the bands movements.
Contact - This will allow 'person insides' audience to contact the band with any queries or requests. If a record label, or events person wanted to get in contact with the band, this is the information that would be used.

Dance a la plage - Website Research
Dance a la plage are a new band, that are starting at the bottom. This year they have played a number of times at the O2 in Oxford, and they have also been at parties and other events.
There website includes: News, Vita (their story), Media (there song clips), Live (Tickets and gigs), Gallery, Shop, and Contact Details.
- This is all the key details that there audience would be interested in, and allow them to follow the band.
- The band focuses a lot on social networking sites such as; Facebook and twitter. The band are on a low budget, so therefore this method of advertisement is crucial for them to get there name out there and make the most of word of mouth.
- The music video on youtube brought huge opportunities for them, within the first week it hit 20,000views.

Ancillary text
I must now decide which ancillary text I would like to do, to go with the music video.
My choices are:
A Website homepage for band
A cover for it's release on dvd
A Magazine advertisement for the dvd
I have decided to do a Website homepage for the band, and a magazine advertisment
For the website i will be using a programme called Wix, and to create the magazine advertisment release i will
use my own photography and photoshop. The reason I decided on these, was based on the
fact I felt they were more suitable and matched the image of 'person inside'. I felt my target audience would
not be interested in a DVD release, do to their interests.

Editing 5
Today I changed the rough edit of shots in to the final edit. I put all the shots in and ensured that if flowed and that the lip syncing was accurate where need be. I had to alter some shots and swop some round to make the video flow better. I use different transitions and I added more shots to speed up the music video to prevent boredom. next editing I will alter the colour within the clips.
Today I also added the shots of his band in to the clips, and did a split screen with kendall and then his band.

Target Group
The
music video will focus on an audience that like alternative music.
More
specifically those who are aged between 16 – 23 years and go to festivals/gigs, and prefer listening to niche rather than mainstream
My last post showed the graphs and research to back up how I came about this decision. (Primary research)
Audience Research
Out of the people I asked that enjoy watching Alternative music videos, I identified that the age range was 16-23 and they enjoyed going to festivals and attended them regularly. I also identified that this audience prefers niche artists, which is bands like Off shore break (Kendall). I also identified the majority of this target audience (16-23 and attend festivals/gigs), enjoy performance based music videos. This is how I have identified who my target audience is for my music video 'person inside'.
Music Video Product Analyses
Music Video Product Analyses from Drew Middleton
This was extremely helpful and provided me with top tips of how I can get certain emotions to come across within the music video. E.g. face close-ups are good at portraying closed in, negative emotions.

Research - Survey
Eiditng 4
Today I spent the afternoon editing, and managed to create a rough edit. This allowed me to identifiy that I did not need to do any more filming and that my music video is on track for completion. The shots all flow and I have a bigger enough sample to select from.

Star Voice
The Star Voice for my music video would be the band 'iImagine dragons' - they are an American indie rock band that are based in Las Vegas. There song 'On top of the world' inspired me, due to the feel good factor that it created.

Editing 3
Today I spent all day Editing and managed to do a minute. The shots and transitions were successful and I had a wide range of shots to choose from. I identified that the colour is definitely going to need to be edited for all the clips.
Sunday, 10 February 2013
Second Editing
I got the first 30 seconds complete, which was the opening to the music video and the start of the lyrics. It allowed me to make sure I had kendall entering the screen at the right time and that his lip syncing was accruate at the beggining of the music video.
I started with an establishing shot and then approached kendall and had medium-close up shots. The range of shots allowed me to introduce kendall within a short amount of time.

Editing Techniques
For my last clip within the video, I have Kendall on the back of the trailer playing his guitar and singing as he gets driven away by the landrover down the single track road..
When filming this I did it in slow motion to ensure it was a steady shot and I got all the key details. To ensure this clip fits in with the rest of the movie and doesn't bore the viewer I need to edit it to be quicker towards the end. When the trailer disappears in the distance, it seems like the road goes on forever due to the car driving so slow for my camera.
This is an easy technique on my editing software:

Editing possibility
This would be an excellent technique that I could use in the music video, it would create a simular effect as what the music video 'one republic - good life' have created. It would allow me to show two moving clips at the same time. This would help me show a contrast between kendall singing and the day to day life that surrounds him.

First Editing -
Today I loaded all my footage of the camera and put it into Serif - MoviePlusX5 to allow me to start editing...
I had a play around with all the software to remind myself the different techniques that i can use:
- Applying Transitions
- Trimming
- Panning and Zooms
- Arranging/resizing clips
- Using Envelopes
- Slowing down or Speeding up clips
- Video Overlays
- Transparency and Opacity
- Applying Video effects (2D filter effect, 3D filter effect, colour correction)
- Adding/animating text
As well as experimenting with the programme myself, I found the Serif MoviePlusX5 user guide helpful to expand my knowledge further and explore the most effective techniques that would be appropriate to use for my music video. I hope that this will allow me to use the software to it's full potential. https://www.serif.com/content/manuals/en/movieplusx5.pdf

Filming 3
Filming 3
Today I filmed for 3 hours, Igot the last third of filming complete, and I got some more shots of the first filming session that I didn't think were to the standard that they should be or any faults in the clips. The lip syncing worked well, and I got some effective closeups on Kendalls face. I also got a shot of the landrover and trailer disapearing into the distance, which I think will be effective to finish off the music video. I got shots at a variety of angles and got a good movement shot for the line 'when you're smiling and happy'.. The third filming gathered a huge range of shots, however, again some had faults in them that would have been hard to deal with in the editing stage. Panning shots were often moved too quickly. Another weakness is that I have a lot more shots of specific lines, and less of others, which means some shots will be excellent and others don't have the same opportunities.

Filming session 2
Filming 2
In filming 2 I did the second third of the filming. This went well, I filmed for 1.30hours and i gathered some excellent close up shots of kendall on the guitar, and some lip syncing shots that worked efffectively. Simularly to filming 1, I should have got more shots of each one shot that I wanted in the Video, to ensure that the camera was at the right angle etc. The sunlight was still perfect, and I did well at ensuring there were not any shadows in the clip. The sky remained blue, which will be effective for my editing.

Filming session 1
Filming 1
The first filming session I managed to film the first two choruses of the song. This was a good amount of filming for the amount of time that I had, 2 hours. I was able to get a good range of shots in, with different angles, and movement. The lighting was perfect, as it was a sunny day and the light was coming from behind.
Weaknesses of the first filming
I should of repeated more of the shots, as some of the shots had some small errors e.g. the camera wasn't level, sudden movement, or a shadow within the clip.
Strenghs of the first filming
I felt the shots at the begining were successful. I did an establishing shot, and then zoomed in closer to Kendal. I felt these shots were effective as they gave away the key features of kendall, within the opening. Within these shots I had a range of angles and speed of zoom to chose from and I think the shots will help me to establish his location at the start of the music video.
