Story Board draft 1

This is Draft 1 of my Storyboard. I used pictures, as I felt this was the best way I could portray the story and show the order of activities I would like the music video to follow. Now that i have decided the storyline, I must go on and identify the specific shots that I will use in the final filming.

Brief summary of what is happening on the storyboard:
  • Packing everything but the kitchen sink
  • Trying on different summery items
  • Leaving for the summer holiday with a car full to the brim.
  • Busy traffic as everyone heads to the beach.
  • Getting everything ready to walk down to the seaside.
  • Setting up camp for the day at the beach
  • Heading in the sea
  • Writing in the sand 'oh how i do love to be beside the sea'.
  • Beach activities, comparing old to new (the history of the seaside).
  • Popular beach locations and how they've moved on.

History of the Seaside

The seaside holiday is a great British tradition dating back to the 1700s.

In the 1700's was when people started to believe that perhaps the 'seawater' was good medicine, they got this idea from the spa baths in places like Bath.

In the 1800's trains arrived, and in the norfolk coast there was efficient travel. This meant that rather than having to go by boat/horse and carriage, people could finally go by train cheaply for the day or for a holiday.

In the 1900's, campingin tents/caravans became a new popular accommodation, which has only got more popular since the first opening of a site in 1904.

In the 1950/60's activities were being introduced at the seaside. Punch and Judy, Buckets and spades, going in the sea etc. were finally becoming popular seaside activities.

In the 1970's was when more people started going abroad, however, the seaside still remains to be a very popular place for all. The coast line remains as beautiful as ever, and still attracts people for days out and holidays with the family.

British Seaside History - Victorian

http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/british/victorians/seaside_01.shtml

Here is an inspiring article from BBC that includes a wide range of history about British Seaside Holidays.

Sneak Preview of a few key issues from the article itself:

Victorian traditions - Childish innocence (buckets, spades and sandcastles), nature (starfish, rock-pools and gulls as well as the power and tranquillity of the sea itself), simple 'old-fashioned' fun (donkeys, roundabouts, Punch and Judy, boat trips, beach entertainers), and tasty, informal seaside food: fattening, glutinous and eaten out of the bag while on the move, in defiance of conventional table manners (fish and chips, ice cream, candy-floss, cockles and whelks)

Different Seaside Towns: Different overlapping versions of seaside destinations remind us that there were (and are) many versions of the British seaside. Little informal villages where fishing and farming predominated and visitors entertained themselves and each other, up to big purpose-built holiday towns with the full paraphernalia of commercial entertainment and huge crowds of visitors who needed policing as well as pleasing

This information is critical in helping me show a historical side to my music video. It provides me with information to show where it all came from by exploring traditional seaside holidays.

Theorist - Andrew Goodwin's key conventions

There are certain theories/conventions that'll help the production of my music video.

The theorist I explored was Andrew Goodwin and the key aspects/conventions he believes to be critical are:
  • Thought Beats - seeing the sound in your head
  • Narrative and Performance
  • Star Image
  • Relation of visuals to the song
  • Technical aspects of the music video.

This means to me I need to:

  • Create a relationship between lyrics and visuals - form the story.
  • Create a relationship between the music and the visuals. Involve the artist within the music video, linking will keep the audience intrigued.
  • Create images that will attract the audience and create a memory.
  • Illustrate, Amplify, Disjuncture - Promote the song through the video.
  • Portray technical aspects;
Think carefully about: shots, speeds, movement, angles, special effects, mise-en-scene, and beats and cuts.

Song Cover samples

I decided, due to popularity, that i wanted to do a cover of the song i'm doing for my music video. I have asked one boy band and three other female artists (Kendal and his band, Darcy, Imo, and Sonja) - whether they would be interested in doing a cover for the song. The letter i sent to them was as so:

Hello,

For my A2 Media Project this year I am creating a music video for the song 'oh how i do like to be beside the sea'. I would like to do a cover for this song, and i wondered whether you would be interested in doing a recording for me? I will be asking a number of people for a sample of the song, audition, and then decide on the most appropriate version to match my video idea.

Really don't worry if not, just thought it was worth asking just incase.

Thanks,
Clare

I have had three positive replies and hope to upload a sample of the recordings in the next couple of weeks.

Song Lyrics

1st song lyrics - Basil Rathbone

Everyone delights to spend their summer's holiday
Down beside the side of the silvery sea
I'm no exception to the rule
In fact, if I'd my way
I'd reside by the side of the silvery sea.
But when you're just the common or garden Smith or Jones or Brown
At bus'ness up in town
You've got to settle down.
You save up all the money you can till summer comes around
Then away you go
To a spot you know
Where the cockle shells are found.

Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside
I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll upon the Prom, Prom, Prom!
Where the brass bands play:
"Tiddely-om-pom-pom!"
So just let me be beside the seaside
I'll be beside myself with glee
And there's lots of girls beside,
I should like to be beside
Beside the seaside!
Beside the sea!

Timothy went to Blackpool for a day last Eastertide
to see what he could see beside the sea
as soon as he reached the station there the first thing he espied
was a wine lodge doors stood open invitingly.
To quench his thirst he toddled inside
and called out for a wine which grew to eight or nine
till his nose began to shine! said he what people see in the sea I plainly fail to see,
so he caught the train back home again and to his wife said he.

Oh! I do like to be beside the seaside
I do like to be beside the sea!
I do like to stroll upon the Prom, Prom, Prom!
Where the brass bands play:
"Tiddely-om-pom-pom!"
So just let me be beside the seaside
I'll be beside myself with glee
And there's lots of girls beside,
I should like to be beside
Beside the seaside!
Beside the sea!

2nd Song Lyrics - Traditional Childrens

Oh I do like to bebeside the seasideI do like to bebeside the sea
Oh I do like to stroll alongthe prom, prom, promwhere the brassbands play'Tiddly om pom pom'
So just let me bebeside the seasideI'll be besidemyself with glee
And there's lots ofgirls besideI should like to be besidebeside the seasidebeside the sea

Humour version of the song

This is another alternative of the music video, and it shows how the images in the frame and the way it is sang can create a very different feeling to the song. This focuses on the humour of the song, and shows some traditional cartoon storyboarding images with seaside quotes and sayings.

"Upbeat to the usual way it was sang when I was a kid also a seaside organ playing it in the middle all accompanied by a few saucy post cards of the type that were always found down Southend , Clacton or most places on the coast. They always had a double meaning and where quite risqué in the 50s and 60s. When I was a kid I used to have a gander at these but the joke usually went right over me head. Saying that, though some of the cards look 40s,50s and 60s ish there are some that are of this century eg The Eden Project one and The Wind Generator farm one."

Traditional Brighton Seaside

This Video Portrays Brighton in the more traditional times, and gives me a good indication of the key changes that seaside holidays have had. The way that this song was sang was significant, it was an older mans voice and it was very jolly. This suited the picture that was being shown within the frame and identified that there is an older market audience for this song.

Talk Talk x-Factor Adverts

This is the new talk talk adverts, sponsoring the X-factor. It allows people to get interactive and have their own faces appear in the TV's.

This inspired me, as i felt it would be a quirky idea to include in my music video. I could have the back ground on the beach, with the 'singers' face in the TV. I think this would be effective due to the creativity and originality of it.

Information about the sponsorship:
"Fans will be directed to the online studio that will utilise motion tracking and an interactive augmented-reality technology, which enable users to brighten up their video.
They can then further edit and personalise their video by adding fun, professional-style music video effects. It can then be shared with friends via email, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and as video ringtones."]

Production Plan

This is my production plan, up to my first filming in 13 weeks - i will update this and show the dates i actually get each task completed, as i go along.
