Changing Direction..

After working on my music video choice and starting to film for 'beside the sea', I came across many factors of which got in the way of it progressing.

- The weather at this time of the year was proven difficult - as rainy grey days did not show well on the camera, even if i tried to portray 'british weather at the seaside'.
- It was difficult to get to the seaside, being the furthest county away from the coast - making the amount of shots i could get difficult.

There were also many other issues that lead to me re-thinking my idea. I thought about altering it slightly, reminiscing of the seaside, rather than actually needing to be there. However I couldn't get the right tempo with  the song, and one of the singers who I thought might be able to do it was unable to give the time to sing it again with a change of lyrics and slower - (Understandably at this time of year).

This has lead to a very different new idea...

I have now decided to do a music video with a group of friends who are in a band called 'offshore break'.

Song Cover Option

A Kind man that i found singing the song on youtube, replied to my comment and confirmed he'd be happy to be used as a sample, to cover the song for my music video.

Confirmation email

This man had a very north London Accent, he was jolly, and his voice was much like the original artist 'Mark Sheridan'.

The Artists Profile

Artist Research

The song was written in 1907 by John A. Glover-Kind and was made famous by music hall singer Mark Sheridan who first recorded it in 1909. It speaks of the singer's love for the seaside, and his wish to return there for his summer holidays each year. It was composed at a time when the yearly visits of the British working-class to the seaside were booming. It can be heard at the end of the Queen song, "Seven Seas of Rhye" as it fades out.

Benny Hill

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UPJFS26gckk

Benny hill did videos in 1978, they were very comical and this is a video of one of his scenes at the beach. This was popular in it's time and inspired me with the 'typical' seaside humour which will influence my music video.

Trip to Devon

On my trip to Devon I visited a number of different seaside locations including:

  • Croyde
  • Woolcombe
  • Saunton Sands
  • Bude
  • Widemouth Bay

The reasons I visited these beaches in particular, is because they are all popular surfing and holidays spots. I felt they were beaches that were popular for the seaside activities; shrimping, surfing, bodyboarding, dog walking, buckets and spades, ball games, kites etc.

The shots I completed were:

  • The close-up on different shoes at the beach.
  • A medium close-up of children playing with their buckets.
  • Medium Close-up of teenagers shrimping
  • Medium shot of surfers in the sea
  • Establishing shot of different beaches
  • Tester close-up shot of writing in the sand
  • Medium shot of children playing with a kite
  • Medium shot of a dad and his son playing with a ball.

These were all tester shots, and I will need to re-do many of them for my final shooting.

This post has allowed me to see what filming I have got done, and what i need to do next. I need to continue gaining more shots from my storyboard, so i can meet my rough edit version by Christmas.
