In class today we compared a trailer called ‘TED’, a comedy, and ‘Batman’, an action. These two trailers had very different typical conventions and key features due to the difference in genre and their target audience.
Ted:
This trailer was full of comedy, clip after clip, giving lots of teaser clips from the main video. The trailer tells the audience that it is by the same director as family guy, this immediately will collect viewers and rule others out, people either love it or hate it.
A comedy trailer is one that is very hard to portray, the reason is that people’s humor is very different and it is hard to create something that will be suitable for the big range of audience. This means that having a well-known director will be a huge advantage.
The creator of Ted pushes the boundaries to the limit, using a mixture of humor scenes linked with drugs, sex, violence, and bad language. These of which seem to be the must comical subject areas for 15+, and the characters that are involved make it funnier.
Within the trailer the lighthearted music also had a big impact on ones other all impression on the film.
Batman – The Dark Night Rises:
The music within batman compared to Ted shows a big difference in the type of audience and film that it is going to be. Ted was very lighthearted, compared to the deep mysterious soundtrack shown in Batman.
There were much more shots, at a quick pace to show action and then a slow pace to show thought and expressions. Within the clips, the image was much darker, and at different camera angles to emphasize mysteriousness and wonder. This also showed how the film was going to be much deeper and have more meanings behind it than the funny happy-go-lucky comedy TED.
These two films both have aspects of unrealism, batman’s adventures and a talking teddy, so in some ways they are similar. However the thought of a guy saving the world and always being a hero will attract a different audience to a guy who has a talking teddy that happens to be a huge distraction to his own life.
